Harvest

6: The Jackdaw

When the evening falls
and dew is covering the grass
amphibians are crossing the lawn
newts and frogs and toads emerge
from the pile of deadwood
creeping and crawling the undergroath
in the moisty twilight
in the furthest corner
of the garden

this house is very old
There's noise in the attic
There's noise in the attic
like claws scraping
across the floor

I'm puzzled by the sound
I imagine what it could be
underneath the tile roof lies
a creature of shadow and fear
in the hall I walk to the 2nd floor
to the hatch in the ceiling
Approaching the unknown
with trembling hands
I push it aside
and pier into the dim

this house is very old
There's noise in the attic
There's noise in the attic
like claws scraping
across the floor

this house is very old
and there's a jackdaw in the attic
there's a jackdaw in the attic
Just a jackdaw's claws
across the floor
